AirTag Beeping? What It Means and What to Do

A beeping AirTag is usually a tag that has been away from its owner for a while. Here is how to tell whether it is a problem.

Scan for hidden trackers now

Why an AirTag beeps

An AirTag can play a sound when it has been separated from the phone it belongs to for some time. This is a safety feature designed to help people notice a tag they did not know about. The owner can also make it play a sound on purpose, to find lost keys.

If it is probably yours

If it is not yours

  1. Locate it. Beeps are short and irregular, so stand still and listen. Check bags, pockets and cars.
  2. Hold the top of an NFC-enabled phone against its white side to see its serial number and a partly hidden phone number of the owner.
  3. Photograph it and note the time and place before you do anything else.
  4. Follow what to do when you find an AirTag, including how to disable it and when to call the police.

Is it following me?

Where you found it matters. A tag in a friend's bag is different from one hidden in your car. To see whether any tracker has stayed with you across several places, run a scan with TrackerGuard. It records time and place, then shows a route map.

In testing. Use the app as one signal, along with your phone's own alerts.

Frequently asked questions

Why is an AirTag beeping when it is not mine?

It has probably been away from its owner for a while and is playing a sound as a safety feature. Find it, photograph it and check where it came from.

How do I stop an AirTag beeping?

If it is yours, reconnect it to your phone. If it is not, you can disable it by pressing down on the back cover, turning it anticlockwise and removing the battery, ideally after taking photos.

Does a beep mean someone is tracking me?

Not by itself. It means a tag has been separated from its owner. Check where it was and how long it has been with you.
